Whitney M. Young Magnet High School Located in a contemporary facility just north of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (WY) has a tradition of academic excellence and ethnic and cultural diversity. Ranked the 4th Best Illinois High School (U.S. News Best High Schools, 2020), 2nd Most Diverse High School in Chicago and Illinois (Niche, 2021), 4th Best Chicago High School (Chicago Magazine, September 2019), and 12th Best Magnet High School in the U.S. (Niche, 2021). Both programs require special application and entrance testing. WY's Diverse Learner's Department offers services for over 250 students with disabilities. Drawing students from throughout Chicago, the school is a microcosm of the entire city. Dual Credit / Dual Enrollment / AP Capstone Programs Whitney Young is excited to offer, through our partnerships with both Loyola University and the University of Illinois at Chicago, opportunities for our students to take college courses while in high school, earning both high school and college credit. These programs seek rising juniors and seniors who are highly motivated and capable students with a 3.0 or higher un-weighted GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and verification of academic standing by school counselor. Where Academic Excellence is the Standard The WY motto: "Where Academic Excellence is the Standard" is embraced by students, teachers and administrators who work together as a community. The curriculum emphasizes preparation in all core subject areas, offering a total of 215 courses including 35 AP classes and 88 Honors classes: The school encourages the development of the whole student with a vibrant array of performing and fine arts programs including:
WY has an outstanding 130-member full-time Faculty team: 75% of faculty hold degrees beyond the bachelor's degree and 26 are National Board Certified. WY students work closely with their Guidance Counselors to identify, select, and apply to colleges where they will be challenged, flourish, and go on to successful careers. Virtually all WY students are accepted at four-year universities.
